Mechanical recycling of post-consumer plastics, especially polyolefins such as PE and PP, faces a major barrier to accessing high-value applications: odor.

After being used in packaging for detergents, cosmetics, or food, these plastics absorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that conventional washing methods and traditional extrusion stages are unable to remove, limiting their reusability and drastically reducing their market selling price.

Decontamination is an advanced mechanical recycling process that uses exclusively water vapor and vacuum to remove more than 96% of odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in post-consumer plastics, without altering the polymer. It has been successfully tested on HDPE, PP, PS, LDPE, and PET.

The material is processed under vacuum conditions that lower the boiling point of contaminants, allowing steam to extract VOCs from within the plastic to the surface for complete removal.
